McKinley-Darragh Mine, Cobalt, Ontario
Canada
Size: 4.1x3.2x4.2 cm

$50.00

Raw piece of rich silver ore showing silver leaf and arsenides. This piece is quite heavy for its size, proving to be chock full of high grade ore! Could be worth cutting open? Up to the buyer. The specimen comes from the McKinley-Darragh Mine, a famous mine named after the first two men to stake a claim at Cobalt. Their mine was one of the richest discovered in the Cobalt area. Historic!

"On 7 August 1903, while scouting for railway ties, the men [J.H. McKinley and Ernest Darragh] spotted some gleaming, metallic flakes at the southeast end of Long Lake, later renamed Cobalt Lake. The flakes bent easily and dented between their teeth. They sent samples to Montreal for assaying and the results revealed native silver with an amazingly high concentration of 4,000 ounces to the ton. They filed the claim and there grew the McKinley-Darragh mine." [Grice, (1989), page 87]
