Pyrite, Sphalerite

Nanisivik Mine, Nanisivik, Baffin Is., Qikiqtaaluk Reg., Nunavut
Canada
Size: 10.0x8.5x8.9 cm

$265.00

Here's some lustrous, brassy cubic pyrite crystals. The core of the specimen looks to be marcasite as the one split side shows a much more silvery sheen at the centre, checks out as this mine was known for the epitaxial growth of pyrite after marcasite. There is also quite a bit of sphalerite on the specimen. Sphalerite being the main ore of the mine. A great specimen to represent the long closed locality.

The Nanisivik Mine was a zinc-lead mine in the company town of Nanisivik, Nunavut, 750 km (470 mi) north of the Arctic Circle on Baffin Island. The mine first opened on 15 October 1976 and permanently closed in September 2002 due to low metal prices and declining resources.  It was one of the most northerly mines in the world.

*Please note, this is a fairly heavy duty specimen and may require additional shipping.
