Lead Cove is the site of a very old lead mine operated by the British in the 19th century, when the west coast of Newfoundland was still under the control of the French, according to a peace treaty of the time. The French drove the English off and the site has remained dormant since, except for intrepid mineral collectors that visit the place to collect galena and other well formed crystals. This specimen is a matrix of sparkling marcasite crystals on limestone that is studded with sharp, beveled cubes of galena. Very nice specimen from an unusual, historic location!
