This is an excellent topaz and bixbyite combination specimen from the classic Thomas Range. The bixbyite crystal exhibits a mirror-like, pitch-black sheen with sharp re-entrant angles caused by polysynthetic twinning. Bixbyite, a manganese iron oxide mineral, has a variable iron-to-manganese ratio, with some specimens containing little to no iron. Its complex cubic habit, along with modified corners and edges, makes bixbyite a fascinating species. Adding to its appeal, this specimen is attached to a gemmy topaz crystal, making it a truly exceptional example from this renowned locality.
