This specimen features a striking arrangement of vugs nestled within a matrix of prehnite and grossular. The cavities are adorned with sharp, 1–2 mm grossular dodecahedra and terminated prisms of prehnite, both exhibiting a delicate pink-orange hue.
Sourced from the renowned Jeffrey Mine in Val-des-Sources (formerly Asbestos), Quebec, this piece is a testament to the locality’s legacy. The Jeffrey Mine, once a massive open-pit chrysotile asbestos operation, spanned 2 km in diameter and reached depths of 350 meters. Mining began in 1879, but the decline in asbestos demand in the 1980s due to its health risks ultimately led to the mine’s closure in 2001. Though inactive, the Jeffrey Mine remains celebrated among collectors for its exceptional mineral specimens, including prehnite and grossular, making finds like this increasingly rare and valuable.
