Dolomite, Pyrite ps Marcasite

Nanisivik Mine, Nanisivik, Baffin Is., Qikiqtaaluk Reg., Nunavut
Canada
Dimensions: 24.0x9.9x8.5 cm
Price: CA

A large cabinet sized specimen of brassy pyrite blades after marcasite, boasting a large patch of grey rhombohedral dolomite scattered all along its surface. It also has a few minor calcites on the matrix. This particular type of pseudomorph is what the Nanisivik Mine is best known for.  It's a unique specimen of epitaxially orientated pyrite pseudomorph from this long closed zinc mine.

The Nanisivik Mine was a zinc-lead mine in the company town of Nanisivik, Nunavut, 750 km (470 mi) north of the Arctic Circle on Baffin Island. The mine first opened on 15 October 1976 and permanently closed in September 2002 due to low metal prices and declining resources. Sphalerite was the main ore. It was one of the most northerly mines in the world.

*Please note that due to the weight of this specimen we may have to discuss shipping options.
