Scotland Rocks: My Geological Travel Highlights

My wife, Melanie, and I recently spent twelve unforgettable days exploring Scotland. While we certainly didn't see the entire country, we covered a good portion of it, travelling from the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh to the Inner Hebrides, including the Isles of Mull and Skye, before making our way back south.

Along the way we experienced magnificent castles and ancient ruins, watched puffins nesting along the coast, admired the Highland "coos," hiked through some of the most spectacular scenery I've ever seen, enjoyed fantastic food, and sampled more than a few drams of Scotch whisky too. Glasgow and Edinburgh were vibrant and full of history, while the Highlands had a way of making you slow down and simply appreciate the landscape.

If you've been following along on Facebook or Instagram, you've already seen many of the photos from our trip. Rather than repeating those highlights here, I'd like to take a deeper dive into the geological highlights. Everywhere we travelled I kept a keen eye on the road cuts, sea cliffs, and mountains.

And so, this journal isn't intended to be a comprehensive travel guide. Instead, it's a collection of the geological highlights that stood out to me during our journey, places that any mineral collector, rockhound, or geology enthusiast would appreciate if they ever have the opportunity to visit Scotland.

The Birthplace of Modern Geology

Scotland's mountains, coastlines, and islands preserve an extraordinary record of Earth's history spanning nearly three billion years. The country played a central role in the development of modern geology, largely thanks to Scottish geologist Sir James Hutton, whose observations forever changed how we understand our planet. If his name is unfamiliar to you, I highly recommend picking up a copy of The Map That Changed the World. It's an excellent biography that explores Hutton's life, his revolutionary ideas, and the profound impact he had on the science of geology.

Scotland is also well known among mineral collectors for its many classic localities, several of which are type localities for important species such as heulandite-Ca, strontianite, leadhillite, and brewsterite. One particularly interesting connection is that the element strontium takes its name from the village of Strontian in the Scottish Highlands, where strontianite was first identified. The country has also produced fine specimens of smoky quartz, known locally as “Cairngorm” (Scotland’s national gemstone), as well as amethyst, baryte, calcite, fluorite, galena, pyrite, and numerous zeolite species associated with the ancient volcanic rocks of Skye and the surrounding Hebridean islands.

The historic lead mining districts of Leadhills and Wanlockhead yielded exceptional mineral specimens for museums and collectors throughout the nineteenth century and remain legendary localities today. Although we didn't visit any active collecting sites in these areas, it was exciting to know that many of these famous localities were scattered throughout the landscapes we were exploring.

Throughout the trip, I found myself paying just as much attention to the rocks as I did the scenery. The volcanic basalts of the Hebrides were especially fascinating and seemed to make up much of the landscape on Mull and Skye. Nearly every fresh road cut tempted me to stop and have a closer look. Many of these basalt flows are riddled with vugs. These vugs formed as bubbles escaped from the cooling lava millions of years ago. Over time, mineral-rich groundwater deposited beautiful zeolite minerals inside these cavities, creating countless small crystal-lined pockets. Even from the roadside, it was hard to resist stopping to admire these little geological treasures.

National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

During my trip to Scotland, I made a point of visiting the National Museum. Admission was completely free to the public, something largly missing from our institutions here in North America. Anyone can walk in and explore the many fantastic displays.

While the museum didn’t have a huge display of UK minerals, it featured a respectable selection of facinating specimens and rarities. A particular highlight was seeing specimens, sketches, and notes associated with the aformentioned Sir James Hutton, often regarded as the father of modern geology. His revolutionary idea, that Earth's features were shaped by slow, continuous processes operating over immense spans of time, challenged conventional thinking in the late eighteenth century. His famous conclusion that there was "no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end" still resonates with geologists today.

For this post, I’m trying to focus on the minerals, but the museum as a whole was outstanding. The Scottish history galleries were especially impressive, covering everything from the Picts and Highland culture to medieval artefacts, claymore swords, and into more modern history. The grand central hall was beautifully curated and filled with highlights from the museum’s collections. I’d just love to see them expand their crystal collection and showcase more of the UK’s mineral heritage.

Isle of Mull: An Early Morning Hunt for Analcime

While staying at a charming bed and breakfast just outside Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, I couldn't resist checking Mindat to see if there were any interesting mineral localities nearby. To my surprise, I discovered that a known analcime occurrence was located less than five minutes away in a roadside exposure. Of course, I had packed a small rock hammer and chisel in my luggage for just such an opportunity.

The next morning, long before anyone else was awake, I headed out at first light to investigate the locality. The road cut exposed weathered amygdaloidal basalt, its numerous cavities lined with many well-formed white analcime crystals. Some of the vugs contained crystals approaching 2.5 cm in size. Without proper collecting equipment I was limited to how well I could extract decent specimens, but did managed to collect some that display good crystal form and have made for rewarding finds.

One thing that immediately stood out was how surprisingly soft and crumbly the basalt was. The rock split apart with very little effort, often breaking just by hand. With only my lightweight hammer and chisel, it was easy enough to expose fresh rock and recover minerals.

By the time I was ready to leave, later in the morning, the infamous Scottish midges had discovered me and I was surrounded by a buzzing cloud of teeny-tiny biting flies, providing all the motivation I needed to call it a successful morning. Given the quality of the crystals I saw still locked within the rock, I have little doubt that someone equipped with proper tools and more time could recover some truly wonderful analcime specimens from this locality, perhaps other zeolites as well. I managed to wrap a number of specimens carefully back at the bed and breakfast and mail myself a box later that week.

Ancient Landscapes

As we continued our travels through the Highlands, it became obvious why Scotland has fascinated geologically minded individuals for generations. The scenery changes dramatically over surprisingly short distances.

The northwest Highlands expose some of Europe's oldest rocks, including Lewisian Gneiss approaching three billion years in age. Elsewhere, ancient metamorphic rocks, folded sedimentary sequences, and evidence of enormous tectonic forces can be seen almost everywhere.

Much of Scotland's modern scenery owes its appearance to ice rather than mountains alone. During the last Ice Age, glaciers carved deep valleys, polished bedrock, left behind erratics, and created countless elongated lochs. Many of the dramatic landscapes tourists admire today are actually the product of relatively recent glacial erosion.

Fingals Cave, Isle of Staffa

One of the most memorable excursions of our trip was a boat tour to the Isle of Staffa to visit the spectacular Fingal's Cave. The cave is famous for its towering hexagonal basalt columns, formed around 60 million years ago as immense basalt lava flows cooled and contracted during the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean. As the molten rock slowly cooled, it fractured into the remarkably regular polygonal columns that make this locality one of the world's finest examples of columnar jointing.

Over millions of years, relentless wave action eroded the coastline, carving out the immense sea cave seen today. The boat docked at the Island, allowing us to walk onto these rocks and into Fingal's Cave, which felt like entering a natural cathedral, with soaring basalt columns lining the walls and the sound of Atlantic swells echoing through the cavern. It is easy to understand why this extraordinary geological wonder has inspired artists, writers, and musicians for generations, and it was undoubtedly one of the geological highlights of our journey through Scotland. This boat tour also included a stop at the Treshnish Isles, a breeding ground for Puffins, highly recommended.

Calgary Bay, Isle of Mull

As a Canadian, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to visit the original Calgary. The city of Calgary, Alberta, takes its name from Calgary Bay on the Isle of Mull, a connection made by Colonel James Macleod, one of the founders of the North-West Mounted Police, who had family ties to the island. Standing on the white sand beach and looking out across the Hebrides, it was easy to understand why the name made the journey across the Atlantic.

Calgary Bay offered a very different side of Scotland's geology. Instead of towering cliffs and rugged mountains, the bay is home to a sweeping white-sand beach bordered by rocky headlands and remarkably clear Atlantic waters. The brilliant white sand is composed largely of broken shells and other marine organisms, giving the beach an almost tropical appearance despite its northern location.

Today, waves continue to shape the shoreline, slowly eroding the volcanic rocks while marine life contributes to the formation of the beach itself. Calgary Bay was a great place to slow down, take in the scenery, and appreciate the interplay between the coastal processes that continue to shape the western shores.

The Quiraing, Isle of Skye

After leaving the Isle of Mull, we boarded another ferry bound for the Isle of Skye, the largest island in the Inner Hebrides and one of Scotland's most celebrated geological destinations. Among all the places we visited, the Quiraing stood out as one of the true highlights.

The Quiraing is the product of one of Britain's largest and still-active landslides. Here, enormous blocks of basalt from ancient lava flows have slowly slipped over weaker sedimentary rocks beneath them, creating a spectacular landscape of towering cliffs, jagged pinnacles, hidden plateaus, and steep escarpments. These volcanic rocks were erupted around 60 million years ago during the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean, and the landscape continues to evolve today as the slopes gradually creep downhill under the influence of gravity and erosion.

The hike proved to be challenging. I would strongly recommend proper hiking boots, a walking stick or trekking poles, and clothing suitable for wind and rain. Several sections of the trail had been washed out by active waterfalls flowing down from the cliffs, and there were a few steep stretches where we had to scramble uphill over loose rock.

We began at the lower end of the trail, made our way through the valley, and gradually climbed toward the top. From there, the route descended back toward the parking area by way of a long series of stone steps, perhaps 500 or more. Many visitors seemed to skip the full circular route and instead climb the steps to the viewpoint before returning the same way. Personally, I would not recommend tackling the stair side first. It looked absolutely exhausting. The gradual climb through the valley was challenging enough, but far more manageable, and taking the steps downhill made for a much easier finish.

Of course, I couldn't resist examining the rocks along the trail. The basalt was riddled with small vugs, many of which contained attractive zeolite mineralization. I found several pockets lined with small but well-formed chabazite and analcime crystals, along with numerous other tiny zeolites that seemed to appear almost everywhere I looked. While none were particularly large, it was a real treat to come across some of these crystals in their natural setting.

The Fairy Pools, Glenbrittle

Another unforgettable stop was the hike to the Fairy Pools at the foot of the Black Cuillin in Glenbrittle on the Isle of Skye. Crystal-clear streams cascade over ancient volcanic rocks, forming a series of vivid blue pools and waterfalls that have become one of Scotland's most photographed natural attractions. The Black Cuillin themselves are composed largely of dark gabbro and basaltic rocks, remnants of the immense volcanic activity that shaped Skye around 60 million years ago.

We were especially fortunate with the weather. As intermittent rain showers gave way to sunshine, a brilliant rainbow stretched across the valley, providing a spectacular backdrop to the waterfalls and mountains. It was one of those rare moments where the scenery seemed almost surreal.

The Three Sisters of Glencoe

Driving through Glencoe, perhaps best known historically as the site of the Glencoe Massacre of 1692, was particularly memorable. The steep volcanic valley walls tell the story of one of Britain's largest ancient volcanic centres, later sculpted by repeated glaciations during the Ice Ages.

The Three Sisters of Glencoe are among Scotland's most iconic mountain landscapes and were one of the highlights of our journey through the Highlands. These three steep ridges (Beinn Fhada, Gearr Aonach, and Aonach Dubh) form part of the ancient volcanic complex that once dominated this region over 400 million years ago. Since then, repeated glaciations have carved and sculpted the mountains into the dramatic U-shaped valley seen today, leaving behind towering cliffs, sharp ridges, and deep hanging valleys.

Standing in Glencoe, it's impossible not to appreciate the immense geological forces that shaped the landscape. The Three Sisters are enough to remind anyone that the landscapes we admire today are the products of an incredibly long and dynamic geological history.

Another memorable stop was An Torr, a prominent rocky hill overlooking Loch Achtriochtan in Glencoe. Although modest in height, it offers one of the finest viewpoints in the valley, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the famous Three Sisters. The hill is composed of volcanic rocks belonging to the ancient Glencoe Caldera, the remnants of a massive volcanic eruption that occurred roughly 420 million years ago during the Caledonian mountain-building period.

A short hike led us up a series of stone steps to the Sun Stone, a prominent boulder thought to have served as a prehistoric place of significance and, in later centuries, a gathering place or signalling point for local Highland clans during times of emergency. Whether or not every story attached to the site is true, it certainly has an atmosphere about it. Visiting on the summer solstice made the experience feel especially meaningful, adding another layer of connection to a landscape that has witnessed both immense geological change and centuries of human history.

Nearby, a mountain stream offered the perfect place to take off our boots and cool our feet in the crystal-clear water flowing through the valley. An Torr is a wonderful reminder that even a relatively short walk can reveal both remarkable geology and a fascinating glimpse into Scotland's cultural past.

Looking back at Scotland

Travelling with a geological mindset changes the way you experience a place. Instead of simply admiring a mountain, you wonder what it's made of. Road cuts become bisected windows into Earth's history. Cliff faces reveal ancient volcanic eruptions, tectonic collisions, and the immense power of glaciers that sculpted the landscape over millions of years.

I certainly left inspired. While we came home with countless photographs, wonderful memories, and a deeper appreciation for Scotland's history and culture, I also returned with a renewed sense of curiosity.
