Zincolivenite

37 Level, Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region
Namibia
Dimensions: 5.6x3.3x2.6 cm
Price: CA

This striking specimen features numerous intense electric green crystals of zincolivenite, beautifully scattered across a quartz matrix. Originally labelled "adamite" just as on other older labels as "cuproadamite" or "cuprian adamite", these crystals were long misidentified until more recent analyses confirmed them as zincolivenite, a species approved only in recent decades. According to mindat.org, zincolivenite is an intermediate member of the solid-solution series between olivenite and adamite, with an ideal Zn:Cu ratio of 1:1—not to be confused with zinc-bearing olivenite.

This piece originates from Level 37 of the Tsumeb Mine, deep within the famed third oxidation zone—an area world-renowned for producing rare and unusual mineral species, particularly those rich in germanium. In addition to zincolivenite, the specimen hosts minor light olive-green tufts of olivenite and though not confirmed the dark aggregates on the quartz most likely contain chalcocite and/or germanite. The association highlights the extraordinary chemical diversity of Tsumeb, where secondary minerals of copper, zinc, and arsenates often formed in striking combinations. Attractive, scientifically important, and mineralogically significant, this specimen is a classic example from one of the world’s most celebrated deposits.

A superb example that comes from the well-regarded collection of Peter Tarassoff, a name well-known among Canadian collectors for his discerning eye and contributions to the hobby.
