White-coated weloganite crystals lay on the surface of this sample, accompanied by white calcite rhombs. Dr. Tarassoff noted on the label that the crystals are on aphanitic rock, as opposed to the limestone typically seen at the Francon Quarry. Aphanitic rock is an igneous extrusive rock that cooled so quickly that crystal growth was inhibited. Collected by Dr. Tarassoff in 1968, this specimen originates from the Francon Quarry in central Montreal. The quarry, known for its alkalic intrusive sill in limestone, ceased operations in 1981 and will never reopen, making specimens from this location particularly rare and valuable to collectors.
