This attractive crystal is the rare manganoan variety of tremolite, an amphibole distinguished by its delicate lilac to rich purple colour. Commonly referred to as "hexagonite," it was originally believed to be hexagonal in form but was later confirmed to be monoclinic. This variety is found only in two counties in New York State, with this particular specimen originating from the well-known Balmat locality in St. Lawrence County. The crystal exhibits an elongated prismatic habit and displays a vivid purple hue when viewed down its length. Standalone crystals like this are uncommon, as the mineral is more typically encountered in fibrous masses.
