Titanite, Quartz

Smart Mine "Miller Property", Bonnechere Valley, Ontario
Canada
Dimensions: 10.8x8.6x4.1 cm
Largest crystal size: 34 mm
Price: CA

This specimen features a dark maroon titanite crystal with a highly unusual habit and a bumpy, textured surface. Though complete, the crystal appears as though it's "been through hell and back," showcasing irregularities that hint at a turbulent formation process. The titanite is perched atop a matrix of smoky quartz, which itself has rounded edges, organic forms, and hollow areas. Quartz is rare at the Smart Mine but does occasionally appear, as seen here. The crystal originates from the Smart Mine, also known as the "Miller Property," a calcite vein dyke system once mined for fluorapatite, used in fertilizers.

This locality is well-known among local rockhounds for producing bizarre mineralizations where crystals often exhibit signs of breaking, re-healing, or appearing as though they were melted and re-formed multiple times. This titanite exemplifies such a phenomenon. Adding to the uniqueness of this piece is a tiny 1mm zircon nestled near the base of the titanite. This unusual and visually intriguing specimen stands out as an oddball from a classic Grenville locality, capturing the geological complexity of the area.
