This is a sample of massive grey tephrolite, a manganese end member of the olivine group of nesosilicate minerals. It occurs in iron-manganese ore deposits and their related skarns. The Noda-Tamagawa Mine exploits one of the biggest bedded manganese deposits in Japan. This specimen was a gift to Dr. Tarassoff from Professors A. Yazawa and Professor Nambu, Research Inst. of Mineral Dressing and Metallurgy, Tohoku, University, Sendai, Japan; May 1969.
