A single, well-crystallized semi-translucent ball of strontianite sits in this vug alongside minor weloganite and calcite. This excellent example of the rare carbonate mineral is an important raw material for the extraction of strontium. Strontianite is a member of the aragonite group. A notable locality piece!
Collected by Dr. Tarassoff, this specimen originates from the Francon Quarry, located in the central part of the City of Montreal. The quarry, known for its alkalic intrusive sill in limestone, ceased operations in 1981 and will never reopen, making specimens from this location particularly rare and valuable to collectors.
