Sphalerite

An exceptionally large and fine example of sphalerite from the Flamboro Quarry, this specimen features numerous complex, spinel-twinned clusters of dark orange-brown crystals perched attractively on a dolomitic limestone matrix. The crystals well-formed, displaying a highly reflective, almost metallic lustre that flashes brilliantly as the specimen is turned in the light. For a piece of this size, the condition is excellent, with just a bit of visible cleavage on the underside.

While sphalerite is a common sulfide mineral found worldwide, material of this quality from the Flamboro Quarry in Flamborough, Ontario is far less frequently seen. Once accessible to collectors and mineral clubs, access to the quarry has become increasingly restricted in recent years, making modern finds like this especially desirable. The locality is best known for its fluorite and sphalerite, and this specimen stands as a strong example of the latter from a now largely inaccessible classic Ontario site.
