Smithsonite (var Cuprian)

This miniature specimen from the world-famous Tsumeb Mine, Namibia features well crystallized lustrous, lime-green cuprian smithsonite grown over sparkling dolomite on a bit of host matrix. The crystals form a sparkling druse across the sculptural contoured surface, their vibrant colour a hallmark of copper substitution in the smithsonite structure.

Cuprian smithsonite is one of the most sought-after colour varieties from Tsumeb. This example is a fine, attractive representative of the species from one of the world’s most celebrated and diverse mineral localities. A superb small example that comes from the well-regarded collection of Peter Tarassoff, a name well-known among Canadian collectors for his discerning eye and contributions to the hobby.
