A striking specimen of copper-bearing smithsonite from the now-famous 2021 discovery at the Yanga Koubenza Quarries, Mfouati District, Republic of the Congo. The specimen consists almost entirely of smithsonite, with only a small amount of matrix present, and displays an exceptional glowing blue colour with subtle greenish undertones imparted by its copper content. The upper surface is covered by sparkling, translucent botryoidal smithsonite, creating a shimmering effect as the specimen is turned in hand. The reverse has been sawn flat and polished smooth, allowing the piece to sit and display beautifully.

The bright colour of this material immediately recalls some of the most celebrated smithsonite localities in the world, including the famed "Kelly Blue" smithsonites of New Mexico. Among the specimens recovered from the Yanga Koubenza discovery, this example stands out for its especially intense colour and attractive sculptural form. Little new material has surfaced in recent years. The vivid colour, translucency, and sparkling surface combine to create a specimen that is even more impressive in person than in photographs.
