Silver (wire)

Kongsberg
Norway
Dimensions: 2.2x0.9x0.8 cm
Price: CA

This is a beautiful specimen of twisted silver wire with slight natural tarnish, originating from the historic Kongsberg silver mines in Norway. These mines were active from 1623 until their closure in 1958. At the height of production, the Kongsberg mines employed over 4,000 workers, making it one of the largest and most significant silver mining operations in Europe at the time.

The use of German mining engineers from the outset played a crucial role in the development of the mines, which is why many of the mine names and street names in Kongsberg are of German origin. The silver deposits from Kongsberg are renowned for producing some of the finest native silver specimens, characterized by intricate wire formations such as the twisted wire seen in this piece.

Today, the Kongsberg silver mines are protected as historical sites, and both collecting inside the mines and on the surrounding dumps is strictly prohibited, making specimens from this locality increasingly rare and difficult to acquire. As a result, silver wire specimens from Kongsberg, such as this one, are highly prized by mineral collectors and serve as a tangible link to the rich mining history of the region.
