Silver

Langis Mine, Cobalt area, Ontario
Canada
Dimensions: 7.7x6.6x1.1 cm
Price: CA

A very rich, high-grade specimen of native silver ore from the historic Langis Mine, featuring a glimmering calcite vein densely shot through with dendritic and veinlet native silver. The silver occurs as brilliant metallic networks and rounded beads intergrown with matte grey safflorite (CoAs₂), extending right through the specimen and even visible on the rough reverse side. One face has been sawn and polished to reveal the intricate silver veining and mineralogical texture, while the opposite side has been left natural, preserving its authentic vein character.

The Langis Mine is one of the most famous names in the Cobalt–Gowganda silver district, having been worked by several companies since 1906, and becoming solely operated by Langis Mining Ltd. around 1971. By the end of 1966, the mine had produced approximately 9.4 million ounces of silver, ranking it among the region’s most significant and productive operations.

This piece is a classic example of Langis high-grade ore, associated with cobalt–nickel arsenides and calcite gangue. A superb and historically important specimen from one of Ontario’s legendary silver producers.
