A classic specimen of native copper from the historic Cashin Mine in southwestern Colorado. This particular piece is a fine example, showcasing well-defined copper formations with a rich antique patina. Given the geology of the deposit, it is likely that trace amounts of silver are also present, as is often the case with material from this locality. Aesthetic copper specimens from the Cashin Mine remain highly sought after and seldom seen in collections.
The La Sal Mining District, which includes both the Cashin Mine and the nearby Cliff Dweller Mine was first staked in 1895 by James N. McBride. Mining operations at Cashin began in 1896, with underground development following the highly mineralized portions of the Cashin Fault. Initial production occurred in 1898, with intermittent activity continuing until 1946 and final closure in 1972. In total, the Cashin and Cliff Dweller Mines produced approximately 1.8 million pounds of copper and 425,000 ounces of silver, making them historically significant contributors to the region's mining heritage. Despite its rich history, well-formed specimens from this mine are relatively obscure on the market.

This specimen comes from the collection of Dr. Peter Tarassoff, a prominent figure in mineralogy, particularly known for his work at Mont Saint-Hilaire (MSH). His diligent collecting and examination efforts have led him to be the first to identify at least 35 species and discover 12 new species, not only at MSH but also at other alkaline localities. Dubbed the "Dean" of Mont Saint-Hilaire collectors, Peter was honoured with the naming of the new species petarasite in 1980. He has authored or co-authored numerous mineralogical articles and has been a member of the Mineralogical Association of Canada since 1964. Additionally, Peter has volunteered at the Redpath Museum for the past 21 years, where he was formally appointed the Honorary Curator of Mineralogy. In recognition of his significant contributions to mineralogy, Peter was awarded the 2017 Pinch Medal
