A fine miniature specimen hosting rinkite-mosandrite crystals on matrix, accompanied by raspberry-red masses of villiaumite displaying distinctive cubic cleavages. The rinkite-mosandrite group crystals exhibit the typical yellowish- brown colouration and vitreous lustre characteristic of this rare titanium–zirconium silicate species complex. mosandrite and rinkite are closely related both structurally and chemically; in fact, modern mineralogical classification places mosandrite within the rinkite group, often regarded as a cerium-dominant, rare-earth-rich member of that series. Villiaumite, a rare halide mineral composed of sodium fluoride, is notably difficult to obtain. Initially discovered at its type locality, villiaumite was later found in Russia in 1982, Canada (Mount Saint-Hilaire) in 1989, and Namibia in 1992.
This specimen was collected by Peter Tarassoff in 1986 from the renowned Poudrette Quarry, Mont Saint-Hilaire, one of the only localities in the world where rinkite-mosandrite occurs in such well-developed crystals alongside distinctive sodium-rich minerals like villiaumite. With collecting at this iconic quarry now increasingly restricted, fine historical specimens such as this have become exceptionally difficult to obtain, making it a notable and desirable addition to any Mont Saint-Hilaire or rare mineral collection.
