A pleasing specimen of crystallized amethyst with rutile inclusions from the Barnes River area in the Bluestack Mountains of County Donegal, Ireland. The piece features pastel purple quartz displaying milky clarity and gentle colour, with fine rutile needles visible within the crystal interior in one location making this an attractive and unusual Irish quartz specimen.
The Bluestack Mountains, also known as the Croaghgorms (Irish: na Cruacha Gorma, meaning “the blue stacks”), form the principal mountain range in southern County Donegal. They create a natural barrier between the towns of Donegal and Ballyshannon in the south and the coastal regions toward Dungloe and Letterkenny to the north and west. The Barnesmore Gap provides the main passage through the range, and streams such as the Barnes River have occasionally yielded quartz crystals including amethyst. Specimens from this area are not commonly encountered, making pieces such as this interesting examples of Irish alpine-style quartz mineralization.
