This specimen is an excellent example of amethyst from the Peregrina Mine in Mexico, located in an old mining town that now has an estimated 100 residents, a stark contrast to its former population of over a thousand. It features a sparkling array of lavender-coloured crystals. Guanajuato localities are renowned for their multistage calcite and amethyst specimens, and this example showcases these unique characteristics. On one side, tiny amethyst crystals epitaxially replace bladed primary-stage calcite, while the reverse side retains a few rough calcite crystals on the matrix. The calcite fluoresces orange-pink under shortwave UV light, a distinctive feature of calcite from this mine. Adding to its historical value, the specimen comes with an older label from the "Geological Museum - University of British Columbia."
