Quartz (Smoky, Japan Law)

Lincoln co., New Mexico
USA
Dimensions: 1.3x1.2x0.1 cm
Price: CA

This specimen is a fine example of a Japan Law twinned smoky quartz from Lincoln County, New Mexico, a locality known for producing high-quality smoky quartz. The crystal exhibits a glassy luster and a deep smoky hue, characteristic of this variety. One of the most striking features is the distinct twin plane that bisects the two crystals, with subtle but well-defined striations radiating in a V-shaped chevron pattern from the twin plane, with the c-axes of the two crystals at 84 degrees, 33 minutes—hallmarks of the Japan Law twinning law.

The edges of the crystal are neatly beveled, adding to its aesthetic appeal. While the left side shows some contact where it was attached to the host rock, the crystal remains an excellent and collectible representation of this classic smoky quartz form. Japan Law twins are especially prized among collectors for their rarity and the unique symmetry they display, making this piece a standout from the well-known New Mexico locality.
