Pyrite

Thompson T-3 Mine, Moab-Setting Lakes area, Thompson Nickel Belt, Manitoba
Canada
Dimensions: 6.7x2.8x1.8 cm
Price: CA

This specimen features a mass of pyrite crystals from a fault zone at the Thompson Mine in Manitoba, Canada. The crystals display an unusual mix of cubic and striated columnar formations, resembling “tree stump” structures. Despite the vast scale of the Thompson mining complex, which was one of the largest nickel-producing operations in Canada, relatively few mineral specimens were recovered from the site. Opened in 1961 by Inco Limited (now Vale), the Thompson Mine exploited one of the largest nickel deposits in the world, formed through magmatic processes in an ancient ultramafic intrusion. While primarily known for nickel / copper production and the world class millerite specimens, occasional pyrite specimens like this one highlight the complex mineralogy of the deposit. Such specimens are rare and highly prized by collectors for their unusual crystallization habits.
