This specimen features a clay montmorillonite crystalization. Montmorillonite is a very soft phyllosilicate group of minerals that form when they precipitate from water solution as microscopic crystals. Here they appear as silky yellowish-white spherical aggregates, along with celestite, dolomite-ankerite, quartz, and calcite. Collected by Dr. Tarassoff in 1976, this specimen originates from the Francon Quarry, located in the central part of the City of Montreal. Known for its alkalic intrusive sill in limestone, the quarry ceased operations in 1981 and will never reopen, making specimens from this location particularly rare and valuable to collectors.
