This specimen features a matrix of iron and manganese oxides, hosting lustrous, prismatic manganite crystals to 4mm in a one inch thick vein. The jet-black manganite crystals are well-formed, lining the interior of a vug, and are accompanied by some colourless quartz crystals. The contrast between the deep black manganite and the matrix makes for a striking visual appeal.
This specimen originates from a renowned mine that played a significant role in history, particularly during World War II. The mine was a key producer of iron, supplying vast quantities of this crucial metal to both Canadian and U.S. war efforts, among other applications. The combination of historical significance and mineralogical beauty makes this sample an excellent example of the minerals produced by this famous mining operation.
