This specimen features rust-brown octahedral magnetite crystals from a classic Grenville locality. The moderately lustrous, magnetite octahedra display well-defined faces, with a bit of stepped-growth, making it a standout example for the area. Measuring 22 mm, the magnetite crystal is relatively sharp for the locality and includes an attached fragment of phlogopite mica on the backside.
This locality, near the historic and now-closed Faraday Uranium Mine, is renowned for producing high-quality magnetite specimens. The magnetite is naturally magnetic, as expected, and this "toenail"-sized piece exemplifies the mineralogical richness of the region. A fine addition for collectors of Grenville minerals.
