This is a classic pseudomorph combo from the famous Blanchard Mine in Bingham, New Mexico, renowned for producing some of the finest linarite specimens in the world. This piece features remnants of galena, replaced by sparkly, drusy, royal blue linarite and gray anglesite, a narrow quartz and baryte matrix. This specimen highlights the classic pseudomorph sequence from the Blanchard Mine, where primary galena crystals alter to anglesite, followed by cerussite, with linarite ultimately forming a perimorph around the galena, drawing on lead content from the ongoing alteration. In one tiny spot there is also signs of further alteration from linarite to malachite. Specimens like this — with such rich coverage and striking colour — are among the most sought-after pieces from the Blanchard Mine. For additional details on these classic pseudomorphs, see the 1989 Mineralogical Record New Mexico issue (Vol. 20, No. 1). This is an exceptional and aesthetic example from one of New Mexico’s most celebrated localities.

This specimen comes from the collection of Dr. Peter Tarassoff, a prominent figure in mineralogy, particularly known for his work at Mont Saint-Hilaire (MSH). His diligent collecting and examination efforts have led him to be the first to identify at least 35 species and discover 12 new species, not only at MSH but also at other alkaline localities. Dubbed the "Dean" of Mont Saint-Hilaire collectors, Peter was honoured with the naming of the new species petarasite in 1980. He has authored or co-authored numerous mineralogical articles and has been a member of the Mineralogical Association of Canada since 1964. Additionally, Peter has volunteered at the Redpath Museum for the past 21 years, where he was formally appointed the Honorary Curator of Mineralogy. In recognition of his significant contributions to mineralogy, Peter was awarded the 2017 Pinch Medal.
