This specimen features a rich assemblage of schoepite, a rare alteration product of uraninite from hydrothermaluranium deposits. They are pseudomorphous after rutherfordine and come from the renowned Musonoi Mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a locality famous for its rare uranyl selenites and palladium minerals. Here we see them as delicate acicular sprays of bright yellow bladed crystals that contrast against a green malachite-rich matrix.
Due to its uranium content, the specimen exhibits slight radioactivity, a characteristic common to minerals of this type. Well-crystallized examples such as this are increasingly difficult to obtain, making it a highly desirable addition to any collection of rare uranium minerals.
