This is a classic specimen from the renowned Ojuela Mine in Mapimí, Durango, Mexico, featuring a plate richly covered in prismatic clusters of hemimorphite crystals. The crystals are lightly dusted with a reddish-orange iron oxide. The largest crystals are prominently positioned near the top of the piece, and all are in excellent condition, showing sharp form and good lustre.
Some of the world’s finest hemimorphite specimens have come from the Ojuela Mine, a historic lead-zinc-silver deposit that has been in operation since the colonial period and is famed among collectors for producing a wide variety of colourful and well-crystallized secondary minerals. Located on the edge of the Sierra de Mapimí, the mine has yielded classic examples of adamite, aurichalcite, rosasite, and of course, hemimorphite.
This piece is an excellent representation of the material for which Ojuela is so well known—both mineralogically significant and aesthetically pleasing.
