This specimen features lustrous, black, thin tabular microcrystals of hematite, variety specularite, forming plate-like aggregates. Specularite is a striking variety of hematite known for its silvery, metallic, mirror-like (specular) appearance, with aggregates of thin flakes or tabular, anhedral crystals. Accompanying the hematite are dolomite and small dipyramidal quartz crystals, adding textural contrast to the specimen. Dr. Tarassoff acquired this remarkable piece from Gregory Bottley during a trip to London, England, in 1972.
