This cabinet specimen is a classic example of reniform or mammillary hematite, also known as kidney ore, for which these mines are renowned. It has a fine lustre and a deep burgundy-rust colour. Once plentiful on the market, specimens of this size are now rarely available. Most likely mined in the 1970s from the famous, now-extinct mines of the West Cumberland Iron Field, the backside reveals the radial banding of the acicular hematite crystals. Choice old-time material!
