Halite

Lanigan Mine, Guernsey, Saskatchewan
Canada
Dimensions: 3.5x3.0x1.0 cm
Price: CA

This specimen consists of a tabular mass of translucent halite with striking deep blue colour zoning. The crystal form shows one natural growth surface, while the remaining sides appear as cleavages. Blue halite of this quality is unusual in the Saskatchewan potash district and is known only from the Lanigan Mine, a little-known locality in the Canadian prairies.

The Lanigan Mine is a large and historic potash operation in Saskatchewan, now operated by Nutrien. It works 360-million-year-old ore deposits located approximately one kilometer underground. Potash from Lanigan, and from other mines in the province, is an essential mineral resource, critical for fertilizer production to sustain global food supplies.

The Lanigan Mine’s history is closely tied to the development of Saskatchewan’s potash industry, which began with the opening of the Patience Lake Mine in 1958. Since then, the region has become one of the most important potash-producing districts in the world. This specimen, from the former Peter Tarassoff collection, illustrates both the mineralogical rarity and the industrial significance of Saskatchewan’s potash deposits.
