Gypsum (var. Selenite)

Bellekeno Mine, Keno Hill, Yukon
Canada
Dimensions: 9.1x8.3x5.0 cm
Largest crystal size: 16 mm
Price: CA

This specimen features a cluster of many well-formed, transparent to translucent selenite crystals on matrix from the Bellekeno Mine at Keno Hill, Yukon. The crystals display the classic glassy lustre and striated faces typical of selenite, making for a striking small cabinet specimen.

The Bellekeno Mine, part of the famous Keno Hill silver district, is better known for its rich silver-lead-zinc ores, but it also produced attractive secondary minerals such as gypsum in the form of selenite. These specimens are uncommon and provide a glimpse into the diverse mineralogy of one of Canada’s most storied mining regions. This particular piece comes from the distinguished collection of Dr. Peter Tarassoff and was collected by him in 1953.
