Grossular

Jeffrey Mine, Val des Sources (Asbestos), Quebec
Canada
Dimensions: 1.0x0.9x0.9 cm
Price: CA

The Jeffrey Mine in Québec, Canada, is renowned for producing some of the world's finest grossular garnet specimens, often referred to as "hessonite garnets" or "cinnamon grossulars." This particular specimen is a textbook example, featuring a sharp, well-formed, rhombic dodecahedral crystal with distinct rhomboid-shaped faces—classic for the locality. It exhibits exceptional transparency, a glassy lustre, and a rich orange hue. Nearly a complete "floater," the crystal is fully crystallized on almost all sides, with a point of contact on the bottom where it was once attached to the pocket wall.

The Jeffrey Mine, long closed and no longer producing, was a legendary source of top-quality grossular garnets known for their vivid orange colour, superb lustre, and gem-like clarity. Specimens from this locality are highly sought after due to their unmatched quality and rarity. The unique garnets from Jeffrey are considered some of the most distinctive mineral specimens ever found in Canada. For further reference, see The Mineralogical Record, Vol. 44, No. 4 (2013).
