Gold Giant Mine, Hemlo gold deposit, Bomby twp., Thunder Bay Dist., Ontario
Canada
Dimensions: 6.5x4.9x2.1 cm
Price: CA

This specimen features small specks of gold within a quartz-sericite schist matrix, originating from the historic Golden Giant Mine. Located in the Hemlo mining camp, north of Lake Superior, between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay, Ontario, the Golden Giant Mine was a prominent gold producer in Canada. Discovered by prospectors John Larche, Don McKinnon, and Richard Hughes in the early 1980s, the Hemlo camp sparked a staking rush reminiscent of the Klondike Gold Rush.

At its peak in the early 1990s, the mine was producing close to 500,000 ounces of gold annually. During its 21-year operation, the mine produced over 6 million ounces of gold before ceasing operations in 2005 and closing permanently in 2006. This specimen serves as a testament to the rich history of gold production in the Hemlo mining camp and the significance of the Golden Giant Mine in Canada's mining legacy.*
