Giant Yellowknife Mine (Giant Mine), Yellowknife, North Slave Region, Northwest Territories
Canada
Dimensions: 0.8x0.8x0.8 cm
Price: CA

A rare specimen showing specks of native gold in quartz from an obscure, abandoned gold mine located on the west side of Yellowknife Bay, along the north shore of Great Slave Lake. The specimen consists of milky to grey quartz matrix hosting small but notably bright crystalline specks of native gold. While modest in overall size, the gold is clearly eye-visible and shows best under magnification, where the sharp, reflective crystal surfaces become more apparent. There may also be minor stibnite present in the matrix, a mineral commonly associated with gold mineralization from this area.

Early gold mining around Yellowknife Bay played an important role in the development of the Northwest Territories’ gold camps, yet specimens from smaller, short-lived operations are rarely encountered today. Material from this particular mine is especially uncommon. As such, this piece represents an unusual and historically interesting Canadian gold specimen, prized more for its rarity and provenance than for sheer size.
