This specimen features a single, twinned crystal half of fluoro-richterite. Despite minor bruising and only being one half of what must have been a very long crystal, this specimen maintains excellent sharp form, termination and a wonderful satin-to-glassy lustre. Quality crystals of this species are rare in the world, found primarily in the calcite vein-dyke systems around the Tory Hill locality in Ontario. According to Mindat.org the locality was discovered around 1995 by local collector Steve Smith, this area, approximately 100 meters north of Gibsons Road, has yielded many notable Grenville specimens, including fluorapatite, titanite, and, of course, fluoro-richterite.
These crystals, which occur within or weather out of calcite vein-dykes, are prized by collectors worldwide for their rarity, impressive size, and clarity—qualities not commonly seen in this mineral.
