Fluorite

This specimen consists of a cluster of dark purple fluorite cubes, accented by sparkling peach-coloured quartz crystals on a bit of remaining matrix. It originates from the Highway 17 road cut near Yesno Township, Ontario, commonly referred to as "Rossport." Although the locality is still accessible, collecting high-quality specimens has become increasingly difficult. Visitors can still find a few fluorite cubes or quartz crystals, but exceptional pieces are rare. Geologically, the area is significant, underlain by an igneous complex of granite and pegmatite. The granite is intersected by numerous narrow pegmatite veins, primarily composed of quartz and coarse-grained feldspar.

Fluorite veins are often found in the vicinity, appearing on the surfaces of joint planes as seams of purple fluorite cubes. These specimens, including this one, were collected many years ago. These specimens were collected many years ago and this one features an excellent combination of colour, sharp cubes and the more uncommon quartz association.
