This specimen from the AGS Vein in Newfoundland features a tight cluster of colourless cubic fluorite crystals with dark purple tips. Though small, it showcases a distinct crystal habit unique to this particular small pocket at the well known locality.

The AGS fluorspar structure includes three main mineralized zones: the Grebe’s Nest, Grebe’s Nest Pond, and Upper Island Pond Veins. These veins dip steeply southwest and host notable fluorite mineralization. The history of fluorite discovery and mining in this region dates back to the 1800s when local residents first identified the mineral. By the early 1900s, 35 fluorite veins had been discovered, with intermittent mining activities occurring between 1933 and 1990. The Grebe’s Nest fluorite was initially identified in the 1940s, but significant mineralization wasn’t found until Canada Fluorspar Inc. (CFI) conducted geophysical surveys and drilling in 2013. The resulting AGS deposit was mined until early 2022. Although the mine is currently inactive with no immediate plans for reopening, the potential for future exploitation remains, contingent upon economic and operational conditions. The locality is mainly now a popular spot for local rockhounds.
