This specimen features a sprinkling of numerous lustrous, gemmy fluorite crystals with distinctive dark edges, creating an eye-catching display piece. The lesser known, Saint-Philippe-de-Laprairie quarry, located south of Montréal, was originally opened in 1965 by Mégantic Construction and is now operated by Construction DJL. This two-level quarry is part of the Laval Formation of the Chazy Group, composed primarily of thick-bedded, light grey calcarenite with small dolostone lenses and nodular-textured clayey limestone beds. Most of the mineralization occurs along vertical fractures cutting through the limestone. Some of these fractures are lined with calcite crystals reaching up to 25 cm, while thinner, weathered fractures contain either marcasite or fluorite coated with a white, creamy clay mineral.
