A plate of dark forest-green epidote crystals is complemented by a touch of quartz, likely etched out of calcite. This specimen originates from an Epidote-Augite skarn with minor sulfides found in a one-meter-high roadcut near the edge of Steenburg Lake. The skarn, located in paragneisses, was identified through its mention in the 1962 geology map of Wollaston Township and later noted in the "Ontario" issue of the Mineralogical Record.
The orange calcite in the area frequently hosts epidote and ferroaugite crystals. The site, accessible via Steenburg Lake Road North, remains a little-known locality for collectors. This is an excellent and distinctive sample from a rarely explored region.
