This specimen is a well-formed "toe-nail" sized, dravite crystal from the classic Powers Farm locality in New York, a well-known Grenville site appreciated by East Coast rockhounds. With a bit of matrix still attached to the back, the crystal is entirely intact with lustrous, jet-black faces and trigonal form, typical of the high-quality dravite that comes from this historic locality.
Historically, tourmalines from Powers Farm were often labeled as schorl or iron-rich uvite due to confusion about their exact composition. Recent analyses, however, confirm that these specimens are compositionally dravite, with occasional zones of uvite occurring within the same crystal. This unique zoning and history make Powers Farm tourmalines notable within North American mineral collections.
