This combination specimen from the Desmont Mine consists of a large, rounded matrix of massive green diopside, approximately palm-sized, displaying multiple crystal faces and cleavage sections across its surfaces. What makes this piece particularly attractive is the cluster near the top, where white feldspar, green diopside, and a small brown titanite crystal rest together in close association—an appealing and well-balanced mineral grouping. It's been in at least two other people's collections over the years as there are two catalog numbers on it. No sure whose however.
The Desmont Mine, also known as the Homer Yellowknife Prospect, is located in Monmouth Township, within Highlands East, Haliburton County, Ontario. The deposit was explored for uranium mineralization in 1954 and 1955 by the Desmont Mining Corporation, Limited. Mineralization is exposed through a series of pits, strippings, and trenches extending over a distance of approximately 1,150 metres. The locality is best known for its vibrant emerald-green diopside, part of the diopside-hedenbergite series, which occurs in a lime-silicate band hosted within micaceous marble and paragneiss.
