This specimen comes from an old collection and features singular well-defined light gray to greenish-brown diopside crystal, mostly exposed from its calcite host matrix, etched out by acid. The diopside, comes from the well-known Dog Lake (Cranberry Lake, Fiddlers Elbow) occurrence in Ontario. Alongside the diopside crystals, small hexagonal crystals of brown phlogopite mica are present and what looks like a bit of blue tremolite. These crystals are found within a coarse-grained calcitic marble matrix, the diopside crystals are collected on the shore of Fiddlers Elbow, between Dog Lake and Cranberry Lake in wooded exposures on private property (collectors must gain permission before digging).
