Diopside

Dog Lake (aka Cranberry Lake, Fiddlers Elbow), Battersea, Ontario
Canada
Dimensions: 6.2x5.4x3.4 cm
Largest crystal size: 38 mm
Price: CA

This specimen comes from an old collection, and features a grouping of large, well-defined light gray-brown diopside crystals, in very good condition with minimal contact marks. The diopside, comes from the well-known Dog Lake (Cranberry Lake, Fiddlers Elbow) occurrence in Ontario. Alongside the diopside crystals, small hexagonal crystals of brown phlogopite mica are present, and cavities formed where calcite previously crystallized and later dissolved, leaving the diopside prominently exposed. A light dusting of talc appears on select crystal surfaces. These crystals are found within a coarse-grained calcitic marble matrix, the diopside crystals are collected on the shore of Fiddlers Elbow, between Dog Lake and Cranberry Lake in wooded exposures on private property (collectors must gain permission before digging).
