This specimen is a classic example of crocoite from the famous Red Lead Mine in Tasmania, featuring vibrant, jackstraw-style aggregates of acicular, electric orange-red crystals. The crocoite prisms are lustrous, translucent, and rich in colour, with many of the larger crystals exhibiting a hollow habit, typical of the species. The crystals rest on a sturdy gossan matrix. Purchased in the 1990s, this significant older-style specimen exemplifies the exceptional quality for which Tasmanian crocoite is renowned. The sturdy matrix ensures the piece can be safely handled or shipped internationally. Tasmania, particularly localities like the Red Lead Mine, has produced the world’s most impressive crocoite specimens, solidifying the species' reputation among collectors. Without these discoveries, crocoite might not hold the prominence it does today in the mineral world.
