While rarely of gem quality, the ruby crystals from Mysore, India, are among the most celebrated examples of this red variety of corundum. This specimen exhibits a rich purplish-red crystal is set on a quartz and black muscovite schist matrix. Rubies from India are often labeled simply “Mysore,” a designation with historical significance but limited geographic precision. Mysore refers to everything from a modern city to an ancient kingdom. This ambiguity arises because many rubies are sourced from clandestine mining sites, and their exact origins are deliberately obscured to protect those localities. Consequently, rubies labeled as “Mysore” may originate from various locations across Karnataka state.
