This specimen features a textbook hexagonal, lustrous, and moderately translucent grayish-blue, doubly terminated corundum crystal, elegantly exposed on a small remnant of feldspar matrix. The crystal is remarkably well-formed compared to typical examples from the Burgess Cuts, where corundum crystals, especially the sapphire variety, are exceedingly rare.
Mining at the Burgess deposit began in 1902 but ultimately closed in 1910 due to ore depletion. Corundum occurred sporadically as large crystals in red pegmatite syenite, making well-formed specimens like this exceptionally rare and noteworthy.
