An unusual and mineralogically rich specimen composed of massive copiapite, coquimbite, rhomboclase, ferrinatrite, and tenorite from the famous Chuquicamata Mine. The piece displays layered and intergrown zones of iron- and copper-bearing secondary minerals, forming a complex assemblage of yellow, orange, reddish-brown, and dark-toned areas. These highly soluble sulfate minerals developed through intense oxidation and weathering of primary copper sulfides, creating a fragile but scientifically important specimen that reflects advanced supergene alteration processes.

Chuquicamata is one of the world’s great copper deposits and historically the largest open-pit copper mine on Earth. Its extreme arid climate and highly oxidizing near-surface conditions have produced an extraordinary suite of rare sulfate and oxide minerals, including copiapite, coquimbite, rhomboclase, and ferrinatrite. Well-documented multi-species specimens such as this are increasingly difficult to obtain, as active collecting is no longer possible and much historic material has long since dispersed into private and institutional collections. This piece represents a classic example of Chuquicamata’s unique supergene mineralization and is especially appealing to collectors of rare species and advanced mineral assemblages.
